TABLES GIVING ALL THE SCOTTISH MOUN-
TAINS EXCEEDING 3,000 FEET IN HEIGHT.
INTRODUCTION.
IN the Preface to the first number of the Journal it was correctly stated
that there are more than three hundred mountains in Scotland whose
height exceeds 3,000 feet. The exact number cannot be determined,
owing to the impossibility of deciding what should be considered
distinct mountains. For instance, Braeriach and Cairn Toul are always
counted as separate mountains, and so are the various peaks of the
Cuillins, in Skye; and yet these are no more distinct than are Sron
Isean or Stob Daimh from the two main peaks of Ben Cruachan, one
and a half and two miles to the west. The names of these peaks,
though, are not even given on the Ordnance sheet, but are generally
included under the name Ben Cruachan.
In the following tables, therefore, it has been thought best to include
every “top” which attains an elevation of 3,000 feet ; while in the first
column only such as may fairly be reckoned distinct mountains are
numbered.
From the tables it will be seen that there are in all 538 tops
exceeding 3,000 feet in height. The whole of these are situated in
the Highlands, and all—with the exception of Ben More, in Mull,
and the Cuillins and Blaven (Blath Bheinn), in Skye—are on the
mainland. The southernmost is Ben Lomond, in Stirlingshire ; the
northernmost is Ben Hope, in the north-west of Sutherlandshire ;
the easternmost is Mount Keen, above Loch Lee, between Forfar-
shire and Aberdeenshire; and the westernmost is Sgirr na
Banachdich, in the Cuillins, Skye; while on the mainland Ladhar
Bheinn, in Knoidart, Inverness-shire, is the westernmost.

The tables require some further explanation.
In COLUMN I, as previously stated, only such hills as may fairly
be considered separate mountains, are numbered according to order of
altitude.
In COLUMN 2 every distinct “ ¢of” is numbered in order of altitude.
COLUMN 3.—Height.— When not otherwise expressly stated, all the
heights given are from the six-inch Ordnance Survey. Where only
one height is given—as, Ben Lomond, 3,192—the six and one inch O.S.
maps agree. When an exact height is followed by a height in smaller
figures within parentheses, the former is from the six-inch .0.S., while
the latter is the contour height, which Is all that is given on the one-
inch map—e.g., Beinn Ime, 3,318 (3,250): the true height as given
on the six-inch map Is 3,318, while on the one-inch map there is only
a 3,250 contour. ‘“Ap.,” following after the height, signifies that it
is only approximate; the authority in most cases being careful aneroid
observations taken by Dr Heddle, Mr Colin Phillip, Mr Norman Collie,
Mr Hinxman, or the writer. Where on/y a contour height is given—
as, Meall a’ Bharr (Carn Mairg)—no figure is given on the six-inch
map, and only a contour height on the one-inch.
COLUMN 4.—Name.—The Ordnance spelling, even to the omission
or insertion of an accent, has been followed in all cases. As is well
known, the spelling of these maps is very incorrect. Even in one
sheet, the same word is often spelt in several different ways,—Sgurr,
Sgorr, Sgur, Sgoér (with and without accents), Scour, Maol, and Meall,
280 The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal.
for instance. The names, too, in the O.S. often differ from those locally
used. . Wherever a name is given on the O.S. map, however, it has
been retained in the tables.
A * implies that the name is taken from the six-inch niap, du¢ zs
not given on the one-inch. .
A +t implies that the name is locally used, but is neither given on
the six nor one inch maps. In all other cases the name is to be found
on both the six and one inch maps. (See note on Cuillins.)
COLUMN 5.—FPosttion.—The compass-bearings and distances
under this heading are not absolutely accurate, but merely approxi-
mate ; and the latter are measured in a straight line on the map from
point to point. They are merely intended to enable the reader at
once to identify the position of a “top” on the one-inch map, and
are no indication of the walking distance.
As a rule, a general description is given of the principal height of a
group—e.g., Ben Lawers, Loch Tay, North side—or its position with
regard to some well-known place—eyg., Beinn Laoigh, 6,m. E. from
Dalmally ; while minor heights are described according to their
bearing and distances from the principal one—e.g., Beinn 4 Cliebh,
1m. S.W. of Beinn Laoigh.
The abbreviatians, m., for mile; N., S., E., and W., for north,
south, east, and west; cont., for contour; L., for Loch; yds., for yards ;
in., for inch; O.S., for Ordnance Survey; and B., for Ben or Beinn,
are used.
COLUMN 6.—County.—For the sake of convenience, Cromarty has
been reckoned as Ross-shire. |
COLUMN 7.—Sest ascended from.—When the nearest hotel lies at
a considerable distance from the mountain, the name of a shooting-
lodge or shepherd’s cottage is given first. It will be understood that
in such cases accommodation cannot be counted on. The names of
two hotels are often given, that nearest to the mountain being usually
placed first. In a few instances, however, the hotel occupying the
first place is not that nearest to the mountain ; in these cases either
the accommodation is better, or, though farther, the mountain is most
easily ascended from that named first.
.As under the heading “ Position,” the distances and compass-
bearings, where given, are only approximate, the distances being
measured in a straight line on the map; and the compass-bearings
ave those of the mountain to the hotel, not those of the hotel to the
mountain —e.g., Beinn na Lap, Corrour Lodge (34 m. N.W.), Moy
(9m. S.W.) or Roy Bridge. The shooting-lodge of Corrour is the
best place whence to ascend Beinn na Lap, which ts about 34 miles
NORTH-WEST of the lodge. Moy is the nearest inn, from which the
mountain lies 9 miles S.W.; and as Moy is only a small place, Roy
Bridge (Hotel) is also mentioned. :
Altitudes of Scottssh Mountains. 281
COLUMN 8.—The last column contains references to pages in the
Journal.
The Foot-NortEs need no explanation.
CUILLINS (SKYE).—The names of the Cuillins (so spelt in the
Ordnance maps) are from Mr Pilkington’s new map (see p. 235),
which is more accurate than the Ordnance maps. The approximate
heights of this range are from very careful aneroid observations by
Mr Norman Collie.
In the SECOND TABLES the “tops” are arranged and numbered in
order of altitude, only those being numbered in the frs¢ column which
may fairly be considered separate mountains. Of these it will be seen
that there are 283. Inthe last column the number of the section is
given, and with the help of this the reader will easily find the moun-
tain in the first tables..
_ Every endeavour has been made to secure accuracy and complete-
ness. Itis inevitable that there should be some mistakes, but it is
hoped they will not be found very numerous. The decision as to
what are to be considered distinct and separate mountains, and what
may be counted as “tops,” although arrived at after careful consi-
deration, cannot be finally insisted on. I have only to add that, when
first this work was commenced, I had little idea of the enormous
amount of labour and research which it would entail-—a labour which,
even if it had not been altogether abandoned, would have been vastly
increased but for the invaluable assistance given by Mr Colin Phillip,
whose extraordinary topographical knowledge of Scotland has probably
never been equalled.

* Named only on the 6-inch map. + Local name, which is not given on either O.S. map.
1 Sgdrr Mor is the local name. On the 6-inch O.S. this top is called Sgérr Tuaigh.
2 Measured by Mr Norman Collie.
3 Measured by Mr Hinxman, who made it well over 3000 feet.
* The top lies W. from this point and is somewhat higher.
5 Ir Heddle and Mr Colin Phillip’s measurements. This peak is certainly higher than Sgirr Ban and Sgitrr an Fhir Duibhe.
6 Roth on the 6 and 1 inch maps the only height given for Slioch is 83217. On the 1l-inch map, however, about 200 yards E.S.E. of this point, on which is the cairn, isa
small $250 contour. Captain Kirkwood, R.E., made a note in the visitors’ book at Kinlochewe, giving the height at 3260.
7 Only a 2750 contour is given for this mountain. Dr Heddle and Mr Colin Phillip have both, however, made the height over 3100, which is probably nearly correct.
8 Mr Colin Phillip's measurement. Dr Heddle made it some 30 feet less,
® Dr Heddle’s measurement. 10 Mr Colin Phillip’s estimate.

* The point of which the height is given is 1} mile N. by E. of the same Fuar Bheinn onthe maps. The Perthshire sheet gives the height 3062, but the Inverness-shire
sheet 3064, while the l-inch gives it 3054.
4150 yards S.S.W. of the point marked 3217 on the 1-inch O.S. is a point on the 6-inch 3224 feet.

* Named only on the 6-inch map.
1 In the Eastern Grampians it is especially difficult to decide what are to be considered separate mountains, tops, or merely shoulders. Little Glas Maol, Druim Mor, Creag
Leachdach, and Cairn of Gowal are all very doubtful tops.
2 The writer's aneroid measurement.
3 Unnamed on the 1-inch O.S., but on Baddeley’s and Bartholomew's maps called Cairn Taggart.
* Carn a’ Choire Bhoidheach is on Baddeley's and Rartholomew’s maps called Cairn of Corbreach. Close to the crags over Loch Dubh, just N. of the Lochnagar track
from Braemar, is a point 3571 on the 6-inch O.S. The hill rises considerably to the S. of the track ; careful aneroid measurements by the writer on different occasions
place it about 3630 feet.
5 The writer’s measurement.
6 The name Little Pap on the 1-inch O.S. is about half-way between the top and Cuidhe Crdm, which is the 3552 top.
7 As stated in the introduction the names of the Cuillins are taken from Mr Pilkington’s new map, and the approximate heights are from careful aneroid observations by
Mr Norman Collie.

[The immense extent of the labour undertaken by Mr Munro will be
apparent even on the most cursory survey of his “ Tables.” Measured
merely by time, the compilation has to my knowledge—for I have been
somewhat of a task-master in the matter—occupied over three hundred
hours during some five months. It may be affirmed without fear of
contradiction that so complete, exhaustive, and instructive a list has
never before been put together, and that it forms a contribution to
Scottish orography whose value it would be difficult to exaggerate.
There is little doubt that the lists will receive the study they deserve
at the hands of all who are interested in the mountains of Scotland.—
ED.]
List of Scottish 2,500-foot Mountains. | 45.
LIST OF SCOTTISH MOUNTAINS 2,500 FEET
AND UNDER 3,000 FEET IN HEIGHT
By J. Rooke Corbett.
Foreword
By John Dow.
AFTER ascending all Munros and ‘‘tops,’’ Corbett
embarked on the task of visiting all the Scottish hills from.
2,500 to 2,999 feet, which involved the compilation of
‘‘ Corbett’s Tables ’’ as well as the work on the ground.
When the state of his health put a final end to his
long series of journeys north he had not finished the job.
He did, however, make out a list which was forwarded
after his death to the Guide Book Editor, who has judged
that, while incomplete, its publication in the /ournal.
would be justified ; and with this the Journal Editor is in
agreement.
The list of 219 hills is reproduced without addition or
deletion, the only amendments made being in the column
headed ‘“‘ Position ’’ where distances have in certain
cases been reduced by reference to neighbouring Munros
or easily identifiable road points. It does not differentiate
between ‘* Corbetts’’’ and ‘‘tops’’; and reference to
the maps—e.g., l-in. Ordnance Sheets 42, 43, 49, etc.—
makes it clear that numerous heights of equal “‘ merit ”’
to those listed have not been shown. Many of the hills
noted, however, are equally inviting and attractive with
most of the Munros; and it is hoped that the list may be
of interest to ‘‘ Salvationist ’? members at any rate. The
Sections are as in Munro’s Tables—see General Guide
Supplement, page vii.
Corbett was probably the best and most tireless hill
walker of his generation, and love of the Scottish mountains
was with him a passion pure and abiding. Let his list,
therefore, be accepted as a memorial to a personality
genuine and likeable, rather than as an authoritative
document: and may it serve as a stimulus and a plan of
campaign to those who have already ascended all the
Munros (with or without the ‘‘ tops ’’) in any district.
46
The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal.
Thus may our friendly Scottish hills, out of their
inexhaustible riches, give to those who love them new
pictures of beauty, and days when it is more happy to
journey than to arrive; and perhaps, at some later date,
we may see a revised Edition, comprehensive of every
2,500-foot summit.
There might even be compiled a
Supplement containing such hills below that arbitrary
limit as are of outstanding interest for their form, their
excellence as viewpoints, or their rock-climbing interest.

FREEDOM OF THE HILLS.
MINE is the freedom of the tranquil hills
When vagrant breezes bend the sinewy grass,
While sunshine on the widespread landscape spills
And light as down the fleet cloud shadows pass.
l-in. O.S.
Mine, still, that freedom when the storm-clouds race,
Cracking their whips against defiant crags,
And mists swirl boiling up from inky space
To vanish on the instant, torn to rags.
When winter grips the mountains in a vice,
Silently stifling with its pall of snow,
Checking the streams, draping the rocks in ice,
Still to their mantled summits I would go.
Sun-drenched, I sense the peace the hills impart ;
Storm-lashed, I hear it singing in my heart.

Hills in Scottish Lowlands 2,000 Feet and Above. 415
TABLES GIVING ALL HILLS IN THE SCOTTISH
LOWLANDS 2,000 FEET IN HEIGHT AND
ABOVE.
By PERCY DONALD, B.Sc.
INTRODUCTION.
IN the preparation of the following tables, free use has
been made of both the popular and hill-shaded editions
of the l-inch O.S. map and of the 6-inch O.S. map. In
addition, every elevation of 2,000 feet or over has been
visited at least once, and many of the points examined
were discarded as unworthy of inclusion as “‘ tops.’’
The method of determining ‘‘ hills ’’ and ‘“‘tops’’ is
described later, but it may be mentioned here that the
definite policy was adopted of excluding from the list of
““tops ’’ all points of doubtful merit.
The total number of hills is 86 and of tops 133. The
most northerly hill is Innerdownie in the Ochils, the
most easterly Windy Gyle in the Cheviots (or Auchope
Cairn on The Cheviot if tops are considered),* the most
southerly Cairnsmore of Fleet, and the most westerly
Shalloch on Minnoch, both in Galloway. (Extreme
points in the last two cases are actually tops, z.e., Knee
of Cairnsmore and Shalloch on Minnoch, North Top.)
The highest hills and elevations in each county are
given in the following list :—
Feet.
Kirkcudbright . Merrick . i . 2,764
Peebles on Selkirk . Broad Law ; . 2,754
Dumfries . . White Coomb , . 2,695
Peebles . Dollar Law 2,680
Ayr and Kirkcudbright . Ord. Pt. on Kirriereoch Hill 2,565
Ayr . Shalloch on Minnoch » 2628
Lanark and ‘Peebles . Culter Fell ‘ . 2,454
* Cauldcleuch Head in Roxburgh is the most easterly hill wholly in
Scotland.

Section 12 includes also five hills wholly in England.
An Appendix gives particulars of fifteen additional
elevations not meriting inclusion as tops, but all enclosed
by an isolated 2,000-feet contour. These have been
included in order that the table may be a complete record
of every separate area of ground reaching the 2,000-feet
level.
Column 1—Name.—The Ordnance Survey spelling is
always followed, a * implying that the name appears
only on the 6-inch map. Where no name appears on
either map the top has been given the name of its hill
with N., S., etc., Top added. In all other cases the
name is to be found on both the 6-inch and 1l-inch maps.
The number in this column is merely for convenience of
reference from Tables II. and III.
418 The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal.
Column 2—Height.—The heights given fall into three
main categories. (1) Heights given without qualification
are the same on both the 6-inch and 1l-inch O.S. maps.
(2) Heights marked thus ° are from the l-inch O.S. map,
but there is close agreement with the values given on the
6-inch O.S. map. This category comprises cases where
the 6-inch O.S. surface level is 1 foot higher or lower
than the corresponding l-inch O.S. height, where a
Cr. level lies within the limits of 2 feet below and 1 foot
above the l-inch O.S. height, or where a B.M. level lies
within the limits of 1 foot below or 2 feet above the 1-inch
O.S. height. (3) Heights not shown on the l-inch O.S.
map are in every case preceded by the 1-inch O.S. height
or contour -height in parentheses. If there is no further
qualification the height is a surface level from the 6-inch
O.S. map. If based on a level other than a surface
level on the 6-inch O.S. map a footnote gives particulars.
If no level is given on any map the height is marked
‘“ap.’’ and is an approximate aneroid observation or an
estimate made by the compiler. (An estimate is only
used where the height difference required is too small to
be accurately measured by aneroid.)
The following points are of interest in connection
with the determination of hill heights and indicate
the difficulties in the way of obtaining precise
values.
The popular edition of the l-inch O.S. gives heights
in relation to assumed mean sea-level, while the 6-inch
O.S. is still based on the assumed mean sea-level at
Liverpool, which is 0-65 foot below mean sea-level.
Heights of hills on the O.S. maps are, in general,
surface heights at triangulation points. Where such
point is some distance from the top an approximate
aneroid or estimated allowance can be made if no top
height is given on the 6-inch O.S. Where such height
is apparently at the top it would usually be impossible
to locate its exact position relative to the top without
information and possibly personal assistance from the
Ordnance Survey Department. Consequently such heights
may be a foot or two lower than the true top level.
Hiills in Scottish Lowlands 2,000 Feet and Above. 419
In those cases where the 6-inch O.S. gives no surface
level the First Edition Cr. level can be used as a rough
guide. This level may be anything down to 18 inches
below ground-level. Failing both surface and Cr. levels
a B.M. level can be used. Such a level is often on the
side of a fence-post about 2 feet above ground-level, but
may be cut on a large boulder or on native rock surface.
Many of these B.M. marks have disappeared.
Column 3—County.—Tops less than ,'}, mile from the
‘county boundary are regarded as being in both counties.
In this column is also given the sheet-number of the
l-inch Popular Edition O.S. map. in which the top will
be found.
Columns 4 and 5—Hill No. and Top No.— These give
the number in order of altitude of such tops as may be
considered separate hills and their subsidiary tops
respectively.
‘“Tops’’ and “ Hills ’’ were determined by the
following rules :—
‘* Tops.’’—AlIl elevations with a drop of 100 feet on
all sides and elevations of sufficient topographical merit
with a drop of between 100 feet and 50 feet on all sides.
“* Hills..”,—Grouping of ‘‘tops’’ into ‘‘ hills,”
except where inapplicable on topographical grounds, is
on the basis that ‘‘ tops’’ are not more than 17 units
from the main top of the ‘‘ hill ’’ to which they belong,
where a unit is either ;4; mile measured along the con-
necting ridge or one 50-feet contour between the lower
‘“top ’’ and its connecting col.
While the rules as they stand rather lack mathematical
precision, the actual result of their application is that,
with but few exceptions, an 80-feet drop determines a
** top ’’ and the 17-unit rule a ‘‘ hill.’’
Bearings and Distances.—Bearings are in all cases to
the top from the reference point, whether a railway
‘station, another top, a fence, etc. Such bearings are: in
column 6 to the nearest compass point; in column 7 to
the nearest 45°, except as regards bearings from ordnance
points, which are usually to the nearest compass point ;
and in column 8 to the nearest 45°.
420 The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal.
In column 7 ‘‘ Top on N. side fence ’’ implies that it
is within 20 yards of the fence. Such descriptions as
‘‘Top N. of fence’’ in column 7, or ‘‘ Three fences
meet S. of top ’’ in column 8 imply that the distance is
less than 100 yards. Distances in excess of this are given
to the nearest ; mile up to } mile, and to the nearest
4 mile thereafter.
Column 6—Position.—All the principal hills and many
others are located from easily found points on roads or
railways. Hills far from roads are located from a neigh-
bouring principal hill. Tops are located from the hill
to which they belong. The reference point on road or
railway is usually one of the very many points from which
the hill may be conveniently approached.
Column 7—Summit.—The information given in this
column and in column 8 is intended to be of assistance in
misty weather. In this column are given, therefore, any
distinguishing features by which the top may be recog-
nised. ‘‘ No cairn ’’ implies complete absence of any
mark. Figures thus, ‘‘ 3 x2,’’ indicate the existence of
a cairn 3 feet diameter by 2 feet height. If the cairn is
properly built with vertical sides it is described as ‘* Stone
man ’’ and the size given as before. Where the top has
some distinguishing mark other than a cairn, this is
described, e.g., ‘‘ Top at fence jct.’’ or “‘ Grassy flat
25 ft. diam.’’ A top not at the ordnance point is located
from this by approximate distance and bearing. ‘“‘ Top
at fence ’’ means either that the fence passes over the top,
or that the summit is so flat that the top cannot be pre-
cisely located. Tops $ mile or more from a fence are
regarded as having no fence, but for distances from
4 mile to } mile particulars are given in column 8.
Column 8—Fences.—Particulars are given of every
main ridge fence and dike and of most junctions and
subsidiary fences and dikes. Fence means a wire fence
with wood or metal posts. Dike means a dry stone wall.
Parenthetical qualifications of fences have the following
meanings: ‘‘ broken ’’—damaged condition but most of
the material is present; ‘‘ remains ’’—very dilapidated
condition and most of the material is absent;
Hills in Scottish Lowlands 2,000 Feet and Above. 421
‘* obliterated ’’—the original location can only be dis-
cerned by very close examination. In order to follow
this column a map showing county boundaries is necessary,
and if it also shows parish boundaries, as do the l-inch
O.S. and }-inch Bartholomew maps, so much the better,
but this is not essential, as all parish boundary fences and
dikes are also located by a bearing or direction.
Table Il.
This Table gives the Scottish ‘‘hills’’ and ‘‘tops’’
only (including the two on the Union Boundary), arranged
in order of height.
‘Columns 1 and 2 give the hill and top numbers, as
given in columns 4 and 5 of Table I.
Column 3 gives the finally adjusted height only.
Column 4 gives the name, as given in column 1 of
Table I.
Column 5 gives a reference to the Section number and
the number of the top in that section so as to enable it
to be readily found in Table I.
Table Ill.
This is an alphabetical index to Table I. and contains
the name of every ‘‘ hill,’’ ‘‘ top,’’ and other elevation
listed therein, and also includes names referred to in
footnotes where these are likely to assist identification
from tourist maps.
